Database Information Recovery

Databases often lie at the heart of a company's applications. Recovering data lost from databases is vital, as data retrieval can literally keep a company in business. Recovering Database systems such as Exchange servers, SQL servers, Access Databases, Oracle databases and many others is essential, as they often operate the primary applications a company relies on for its functioning.

Data loss from databases, like those from hard disks and servers, can be indicated by several factors, including:

  • The server running the database will not boot

  • There are inaccessible drives and partitions

  • Data based applications are unable to run or load applications

  • Data on the database is corrupted

  • Backup files cannot be recognized by the database engine

Causes for database data loss can include:

  • Reformatting of database partitions, rendering them unusable

  • The accidental deletion of data

  • The accidental deletion of database records

The Recovery Process

Loss of data from a database, like that from a server or RAID, is usually a critical priority. A raw image of the server is created, after which a determination of the cause is ascertained. Any potential physical damage is assessed and damaged components are replaced. Data sectors are examined to determine the server's layout and file structures are determined.

Once the file structures are understood, the database files are extracted. The mechanisms and technology used to extract the files is dependent upon the database structure, damage and integrity. After the
recovery of data is complete, it is checked for validity and the integrity is assessed.

Databases present unique challenges to data recovery experts. It is critical to use extreme caution when addressing database failure. Any use of
data recovery software for database recovery is usually not advisable.
