Before you buy software, or send your media in for recovery, be sure to check the following issues with your hardware:

  • Is the drive working?

  • Have you tested it with several different media sources?  I.E. If it's a tape drive, try using several different tapes and test it's functionality.

  • Have you disconnected the hard drive, and connected it to another machine as a slave drive?

  • Have you checked your BIOS settings to rule out this as the problem?  BIOS settings can be lost for no apparent reason sometimes.

Only once you have checked these primary issues, should you consider either software, or in-house recovery services.
